Resolute Forest Products resumes operations at its Dolbeau factory

The Resolute Forest Products Company announced that it would be restarting operations at its Dolbeau-Mistassini paper mill in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean in a few weeks.

The Resolute Forest Products Company announced that it would be restarting operations at its Dolbeau-Mistassini paper mill in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean in a few weeks.

Thanks to investments of over 20 million dollars, about half of the 250 workers from the factory, which has been closed for two years, should be recalled by mid-September.

The decision to reopen the factory was made following an agreement with Hydro-Québec for the sale of electricity produced at its cogeneration facility.

“This legal dispute with Hydro-Québec was major, and the issue absolutely had to be resolved to make reopening the factory a possibility,” said Renaud Gagné, vice president of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada (CEP).

The union leader says he’s optimistic despite the fierce competition that characterizes the industry.

The Doulbeau-Matassini factory will produce supercalendered commercial printing paper, especially for journals and magazines.

According to M. Gagné, the most modern, best-performing facilities have the best chance of surviving.
