Earlier this year Toronto’s city council voted 40-4 against building a casino anywhere in the city’s limits. However, Councillor Doug Ford is determined to resurrect the issue.

Councillor Doug Ford believes that there is a high chance a vote for a casino at Woodbine racetrack could pass.
Ford believes that the city should revisit the casino proposal for Woodbine racetrack. Earlier this week he stated that it was unfair to group the Woodbine casino in to the same proposal as the downtown Toronto casino.
Ford said, “Woodbine Racetrack ended up suffering because there was so much focus on the downtown leading to a ‘No casino anywhere’ vote result. Again, I’m just hearing and I could be wrong because council changes their mind, that people aren’t opposed to Woodbine.”
There are already over 3,000 slot machines at the Woodbine racetrack and when the council voted on the issue it was a more divisive 24 – 20 result. Ford believes that if the issue is brought to vote again, without the pressure of a downtown Toronto casino, then it could easily pass.
“We either wait a year until we can do that or we figure out another way of putting a motion on the table. A lot of people say they have no problem with Woodbine, so we’ll see what happens.”
