The Mayor of Toronto, Rob Ford, has said that most people in the city would welcome a casino.
During a recent radio show he spent much of the broadcast discussing the benefits, such as jobs and revenue, which the building of a major casino would bring.
The Mayor was joined on air by his brother Doug who is a city councillor for Ward 2. Doug is also an advocate for a casino development and aid “This is all about creating jobs”.
Recently the city held five public consultations to inform residents about a number of proposals for a major casino development.
The last consultation was attended by around 200 people many of which seemed to oppose the casino.
One attendee, a former New York resident said that a casino will damage the city’s image, “Toronto is a great city … Bring people in to see the Canadian Opera Company. Anything is better than a casino.”
The City Council will be making a decision on the issue on April 3rd. They will also be deciding whether or not to expand the gambling facilities at Woodbine. If Toronto rejects a casino one may be built in Markham or Mississauga.
