There are a number of Tribal Casinos in Canada which have been fairly successful in offering an internet version of their casino and poker games.
The former Chief of the Wapi Muskwa Nation, Bernard Shepherd, is well known in the Canadian Tribal gaming world. He has stood up for numerous tribes across North America and taught them about the opportunities available in the online gambling world.
Twenty years ago Shepherd opened the Bear Claw Casino, it was the first brick and mortar casino on tribal land. The casino was immediately closed down for ‘criminal code violations’ however, Shepherd fought the system in court and eventually the casino was reopened along with five more on tribal lands in Saskatchewan.
Shepherd used the GeoBet network, a turnkey solution designed especially for the First Nations and Tribes in the USA, to try and establish Tribal online gambling and last year he launched NorthernBearCasino.com on the GeoBet network.
Shepherd said that “iGaming is only a small portion of what we want to do economically. We’re involved in huge projects in the natural resources sector, we’re getting involved in retail industries, manufacturing industries. It’s important for us to be included in all those industries so that we can eventually be equal partners with other citizens in Canada, the US and the world”.
