The WSOP Main Event is a well-known gathering for the leading poker stars and professionals, but they are not the only contestants who are worth a mention.
Away from cheering fans and enthusiastic TV crews, first time WSOP contestants are gearing up for their attempt to become the next big thing in the world of poker.
One of these WSOP newbies, or as they are often called “Virgins”, is Shawn Wilson, a Canadian poker enthusiast who hopes to follow in the footsteps of Chris Moneymaker and surprise everyone with an unexpected big win.
Wilson, who is based in Woodstock, Ontario, describes himself as an amateur poker player and stresses that poker is just a hobby for him.
“I’ve played a lot of tournaments but never this one. Right after (Moneymaker) won I started playing online. Just played as a hobby, had some fun with it and always dreamed of coming down here.”
Wilson is hopeful that he will be one of the November Nine and has plans of taking poker to the next level if his dream becomes a reality, “I just thought, I’m going to go for it. We actually want to buy down here, live down here part of the year and change careers be kind of nice. I’d love to play poker full time.”
