The Mayor of Niagara Falls has said it is his vision to make the “honeymoon city” Canada’s premier gambling destination. There are already two casinos in the city, however, the mayor believes that there should be a third.
Mayor Jim Diodati said he envisions the third casino to be like a theature, “Like a big theatre. Not a 1,400 seat theatre. A 7,000 seat theatre where you could bring in the big acts.” Diodati believes that having Vegas style acts would attract American gamblers from across the border. He believes that Casino Niagara needs a makeover, “It’s old. It’s tired. Half the time the sign’s burned out. The fountains don’t work. It’s in bad shape.”
However, he wants to go further and open a third casino with a private operator that caters to the high end gamblers.
Of course there is opposition to the idea. Over the past few years Niagara Falls casinos have been dealing with higher levels of competition, fewer visitors, less revenue and more layoffs. There is a casino a short distance across the border and many people question the need for a third casino.
